FoE Mozambique: Campaign to Say No to Gas! in Mozambique
-
Justiça Ambiental (JA!) /FoE Mozambique is determined to challenge the impunity of the gas industry in Mozambique, with the aim of stopping or delaying as much as possible the exploitation of gas in the country, particularly working to stop the gas infrastructure in the northernmost province, Cabo Delgado but also in 2 other areas Nampula and Inhambane provinces.
-
JA! has been able to put pressure on Total (media attention, international solidarity, working with other FoEI groups, direct pressure) for compensation for the communities that were displaced from Milamba and Quitupo. It is this pressure that has resulted in a delay in the project.
-
Total has announced a Force Majeure to interrupt the project’s activities, leaving without taking any responsibility on the previous actions they had in Afungi. JA’s detailed response to Total’s announcement can be found here: Total Runs from its Responsibilities with its ‘Force Majeure’ Announcement on Mozambique Gas | JA4change
-
In Inhambane Province, JA has started to collect and document all the irregularities that Sasol has done with the communities of Inhambane (Pande, Temane, Mabuine, Chitsotso)
-
JA! is facing numerous challenges – one of which is the war situation in the village of Palma and broadly in all of northern Cabo Delgado.
